RTE is making a £3 million, three-part drama about the life and times of the late Charles J Haughey.

Citizen Charlie will comprise three  90-minute dramas charting the emergence of modern Ireland through the charismatic figure of Haughey and his pursuit of power, wealth and glamour.

The Haughey family has not been consulted about the drama, which is due to start filming in 2013.

Element Pictures will co-produce the series for RTE with London-based producers Touchpaper.

Writer Colin Teevan will tell the story of 'The Boss' who went from humble beginnings to owning a yacht, a Georgian mansion, and the island of Inishvickillane off the Kerry coast in three 90-minute dramas.

Haughey raked in millions in undeclared donations to finance his lavish lifestyle before eventually reaching a €6.5m settlement with Irish tax authorities for undeclared earnings

RTE said  that the series will be as much about Ireland as it about the  former Taoiseach who died in 2003.
