On 3 August it’s Watermelon Day, a date that in fairness probably bypasses you every year. Making watermelon-based cocktails and tucking into watermelon fruit salads is all fun and well today, but how about adding some of the fleshy pink melon to your beauty regime?
Unsurprisingly watermelon is mainly made up of water, roughly 92 per cent of it is actually H2O, making it a super healthy snack to graze on after meal times. Each slice of the fruit is also packed with nutrients, including vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene (known for its cancer fighting properties), antioxidants and amino acids. There’s even some potassium thrown in for good measure too.
So what can all these ingredients do for your skin? The experts at sheet mask specialist ‘When’ have broken it down for us.
Lycopene: A powerful antioxidant known for its anti-aging benefits and used as a treatment for sun-damaged skin.
Citrulline: An amino acid which reduces inflammation and accelerates muscle recovery.
Vitamin C: Which helps to reduce the appearance of sun damage to the skin and protects it from free radicals.
Vitamin A: Which normalises the skin by exfoliation and stimulating the top layer of the dermis.
Because of the skin-boosting properties of watermelons, When’s 10:00 PM mask contains watermelon extract, which works its magic while you sleep to promote skin rejuvenation and help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Skincare brand Mauli has jumped on the watermelon wagon too, including the seeds in its Supreme Skin Face Serum, launched late last year. As well as the fruit, it contains a further 15 hydrating light botanicals, including sandalwood and rose absolute, which have been formulated to repair reactive collagen.
Murad is also harnessing the goodness of watermelon in its new Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence, a hydration booster designed to revitalise skin. As well as watermelon, Mexican blue agave leaf extract, glycolic acid, apple and lentil have been mixed together to plump skin and banish dryness.
Watermelon is also making its way into fragrances including SheerLuxe’s debut fragrance, Luxe by Sheerluxe. As well as the melon, other top notes include a fruity combination of raspberry, plum, pomegranate and rhubarb.
Little Mix’s debut fragrance Gold Magic features watermelon as well, with singers Jade Thirlwall and Jesy Nelson big fans in particular.
“We all like certain smells. Me and Jesy are very much into the fruity, watermelons and a bit of floral as well,” Jade told Cover Media.
