The jury’s out on wearing make-up to the gym. Some gym goers are firmly against it, whereas others won’t be seen dead at the treadmill without, at the very least, a pared down makeup palette.

The skin experts advise against it, as make-up can clog pores leading to breakouts. But for all the fitness enthusiasts there are a few essential beauty items which will keep you looking sleek, no matter which camp you’re in.

Mascara/Eyeliner

While wearing heavy makeup is not advised for the gym, opening your peepers up with mascara may provide a little boost of confidence as you head into a workout at the crack of dawn without your war paint.

Opt for a waterproof version as any other kind will leave you with panda style black eyes. Eyeko has a sports mascara reputed to be powerful enough to wear during a triathlon. Dior’s Diorshow Waterproof Mascara is smudge proof and easily removable, while Bourjois Volume Glamour Push Up Waterproof mascara is a good budget option.

Concealer

Using a good quality concealer to cover blemishes and small imperfections is a good compromise rather than wearing a full face.

Pick a concealer that is water-resistant and smudge proof or you’re dark circles could make a comeback mid-workout. Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, as the name suggests, completely camouflages dark circles, minor imperfections and discoloration.

Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer Kit is a duo containing concealer and powder for seamless coverage under the eyes. While Maybelline’s Superstay 24hr Concealer promises to cover imperfections and last all day.

Lip balm

All that sweating can prove a little dehydrating, and a slick of lip balm with sun protection will protect your kisser in more ways than one as you go for the burn outdoors.

Lip balms with SPF are waxier than glosses and will stay for the duration of your workout. Avoid balms with menthol which can dry out lips and make them more sensitive.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Lip Protectant Stick, SPF 15, will keep lips plump and moist. For those that want a hint of colour on their lips, Burt’s Bees offer Tinted Lip Balm in shades from pinks to reds to plums. Aesop’s Protective Lip Balm SPF 30, contains UVA and UVB filters to shield skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
