GOAL’s immediate priority in a disaster situation is to sustain life. This usually involves distributing food, water and shelter materials, and establishing healthcare and sanitation facilities.

Their programme in Syria is the largest in the company’s history. Current focus is on delivering food and non-food items such as blankets, supporting bakeries to increase the availability of affordable bread, repairing houses, rehabilitating water networks to provide safe water, and supporting livelihoods. GOAL delivers these programmes through distributions of items and through cash/voucher mechanisms to support local markets.

GOAL has been a leading humanitarian actor in Syria since 2012, with current projects benefitting over 2 million people.

GOAL staff face formidable security challenges and risks in providing assistance in Syria, frequently confronting bombings, shelling, and clashes between parties to the conflict.

Humanitarian and protection needs of long-suffering civilians in Syria, as well as displacement, are continuing to grow, with over 540,000 people displaced in just the first few months of 2015.
