RTE has released the first images of Aiden Gillen as former taoiseach Charles Haughey as it launched its three-part drama about him, Charlie, airing this autumn.
Launching its new season Ireland’s national broadcaster has also released images of Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (aka Nidge from Love/Hate) as PJ Mara, Haughey’s friend and spin doctor.

Charlie, made up of three 90-minute episodes, begins in 1979 when Haughey, a health minister at the time, plans his ultimately successful mission to succeed Jack Lynch as taoiseach and head of Fianna Fáil .
Directed by Colin Teevan, the series continues as Charlie “seizes his opportunity to regain power and lead Ireland on the world stage, but domestic complications conspire to bring him down”.
Leadership rival George Colley is played by Peter Gowen, PD leader Des O’Malley is played by Marcus Lamb and Haughey’s mistress Terry Keane by Lucy Cohu.
According to the media release, the concluding episode “sees his bid for absolute power as his enemies circle.”
