Get in on the party at Luton Fleadh Fiesta

Los Palaminos

By Shelley Marsden

The inaugural Luton Fleadh Fiesta will take the form of an open-air concert in the town’s  Lewsey Park on Sunday, August 24.

The first event of its kind this new-style festival running from 2pm-10pm is unique to Luton and has been organised by local people for their community – and anyone else who wants to come along and enjoy the day out.

Bringing together international and local talent in folk, traditional Irish, soul, swing, Tex-Mex and rock – it should be a fun fiesta for all the family to enjoy with music, art, dancing, drinking, eating, a Kids Zone and more.

Gates will be open at 11.30 am and music will kick off at 2pm. Headliners on the day are Los Pacaminos, featuring Paul Young and guest stars, international accordion star Sharon Shannon with Alan Connor.

An Americana seven-piece, Los Pacaminos got together in London in November 1992, as an antidote to the bleak English winter. Originally formed as an opportunity to play their shared passion of the Border, Tex-Mex and Americana music, they played for fun, but word got around and they are now a popular live band with of course a well-known vocalist in their midst, Paul Young.

Paul says: “Los Pacaminos started out just for fun, playing simply for the pleasure of it, and it just took off from there. What’s really nice is that everyone else in the band can sing too, and they do, all in their own different styles. It’s real bar room stuff, foot stompers, not too many slow songs – a real party atmosphere.”

Also on the line-up are Harrow folk outfit The Craicheads; Exit Black; The Wilsons; The Sensationals; The Good, the Bad and the Ginger; Akiva; The Evil Puppies; Joe Corrigan, and local guest star Timmika Ramsay, with proceedings overseen by Diverse FM’s Jim Carway.

There will be a licensed bar at the venue and free parking is available. People with disabilities can bring a carer for free. Disability bookings and enquires should be made by calling the Box office 01582 878100.

The Fleadh Fiesta, which is sponsored by London Luton Aiport and the Luton Irish Forum, has chosen the Keech Care Hospice in Luton as its charity partner for the event.

Fleadh tickets are £12.50 (full price) and £10.00 NUS/Senior Citizens. Free Children Under 16 – tickets required (maximum of five per adult). There are also £11 tickets for groups of 9+ (call Box office for group booking). Tickets on the gate are £15 (cash only). For booking information call Box Office on 01582 878100. Booking fee applicable.
