Ireland’s foremost broadcaster broadcaster Gay Byrne, 81, is recovering well from a heart attack after he was admitted to hospital in Dublin, RTÉ said in a statement.
“RTÉ can confirm that Gay Byrne suffered a heart attack yesterday and is recovering well in hospital. The Byrne family have asked for privacy at this time,” it said.
“All his friends and colleagues across RTÉ are thinking of him and wish him all the best with his recovery.”
He had been spending Christmas with his family and friends before being admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin after he felt unwell.
Mr Byrne, who pioneered live, current affairs broadcasting in Ireland presented The Late Late Show from 1962 to 1999.
