Garryowen surprise Tara in spite Gallagher’s heroics

Garryowen 1-09, Tara 0-11

By Damian Dolan.

Garryowen pulled off a surprise result on Saturday evening at Ruislip as they battled to a one-point win over intermediate title favourites Tara.

A tremendous individual display from Enda Gallagher wasn’t enough for Tara, who were relegated from senior last year, with Sean McDonagh claiming the game’s only goal and John Gordon’s point seven minutes from time proving the decisive score.

Junior champions in 2010, Garryowen have been bolstered this year by a number of impressive additions, none more so than Eanna Kennedy (Ahane, Limerick), Gordon (Easkey, Sligo) and David Carrabine (Castleconnor, Sligo) – the latter having played U21 and Minor for Sligo. After this result, Garryowen must now clearly be acknowledged as a force in this year’s intermediate championship.

In a group made up by St Josephs and St Clarets, Garryowen took a giant step towards securing a semi-final place with this win, while Tara now know that nothing less than victory in their remaining two games will do.

The scores were tied at one-point a piece when Gordon’s ball to the far post was fisted back across goal by Justin Quinn, and McDonagh’s shot on the turn found the far corner of Rob Whelan’s goal.
