Ireland’s most famous dolphin, who resides around the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry, suffered a nasty cut last week which was reported to have been from a boat propeller.
The dolphin, who has warmed the hearts of many tourists to the area for decades, is the subject of a Facebook ‘fan’ group called Fungie Forever.
Last week they posted a photo reporting that the sea mammal had been cut by a boat propeller. “It is on his side and a scratch goes over to the side of the dorsal fin,” they reported.
“It looks deep, wide and red but we have seen deeper wounds on other dolphins that healed quite well.
“Remember when last year Fungie had a piece of his chin skin missing after he scratched himself along a sailing laser? It healed within weeks.
“We don’t know what happened so we are not going to point any fingers, but we do have an idea.
“Fungie knows the boats here and propellers, and knows perfectly how to avoid them, but sometimes he is a bit too attracted to visiting boats and they can have newer and faster props… or two props.” They continued to update the page in the days following his accident, and by the weekend the cut was starting to heal well, but had left slight scarring.
