Enjoy an Irish cultural family day in West London this week – for free!
Irish Film London are running a family activity day this Weds at the Gibb’s Green Hall in West London. They will be gathering together the local community, both Irish and non-Irish to watch an Irish animated film: ‘Song of the Sea’, followed by a craft workshop.
This film was nominated for an Academy Award last year, but was pipped to the post by Walt Disney’s big budget ‘Big Hero 6’. ‘Song of the Sea’, which follows Tom Moore’s hugely successful debut ‘The Secret of Kells’, features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Lisa Hannigan, Fionnula Flanagan and Pat Shortt.
Made by Cartoon Salon, a Kilkenny based animation studio, the animation premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and turned the heads of major international film critics during it’s world tour.
The film follows a brother and sister, Saoirse and Ben who escape from her grandmother’s home to journey back to the sea in the West of Ireland. Saoirse is the last of the selkies, women in Irish and Scottish legends who transform from seals into people. She is tasked with freeing all the fairy creatures trapped in the modern world by the Celtic goddess Macha.
Following the film screening, Irish Film London and Kabutar Arts will present a free shadow animation workshop for children aged 8-12yrs.
