A Co. Mayo councillor has expressed his fears that Westport is in danger of ‘turning into another shanty town like Bundoran’.
Speaking at the meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District of Mayo County Council, Independent councillor Christy Hyland raised the issue of ‘gaudy signs’ being erected by pubs to advertise alcoholic drinks, as reported in the Mayo News.
He said they were in breach of planning before adding that the town was in danger of turning into a ‘shanty town like Bundoran’.
Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle was quick to defend the popular Donegal surfing hotspot stating; ‘Bundoran is not a shanty town to be fair’.
His fellow Fine Gael councillor Tereasa McGuire added that they did not ‘want Westport becoming another honky tonk Las Vegas’.
