Fantasy author’s three-book deal

By Madeline O’Connor

Dubliner Dave Rudden, fresh from a Creative Writing Masters at UCD, has landed a major publishing deal for his new fantasy novel series for teens.

Puffin in the UK has bought the World English language rights to the three-book series, the first entitled The Borrowed Dark. How much for has not been disclosed, but it has been described as a “significant pre-emptive deal” thought to be six-figures in sterling.

The series follows the adventures of 11 year old Denizen Hardwick, an orphaned boy who finds himself embroiled in an ancient and secret battle between magic humans and a shadowy race of monsters, known as the Tenebrous.

Rudden, 26, who won the Fantasy Book Review 2011 short story prize, said: “I couldn’t have wished for a better publishing partner or a more enthusiastic reaction for my debut novel.”

The Borrowed Dark will be published in Spring 2016, while its author gets down to writing books two and three.
