Hands have to go through a lot on a daily basis – from typing at work to doing the washing up, your nails and the skin around them can take a beating. Luckily brand manager and the face of Sorbet Salons, Courtney Fuhr, has some tips on hand to keep your talons in top condition.
“All the experts say, ‘File, don’t cut your nails,’ and I agree with them,” she shared with Cover Media. “Not only does filing your nails help them to grow, (did you know your nails can grow 2.5mm each month?!), but you also have much more control over the nail edge when trying to achieve your desired shape. When filing, do so in one direction to prevent the nail breaking or splitting.”
But it’s not just your actual nails that need TLC – Courtney also advises looking after your hands. In winter the harsh weather can really affect this part of your body, so keep a good hand and nail cream to, well, hand.
“One of the easiest but most forgotten things to do is simply hydrate your hands and nails,” Courtney continued. “Nothing works better in aiding healthy nails! My current go-to creams are Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Hand & Nail cream and Environ’s Hand & Nail cream, both of which work to hydrate the skin surrounding the nail, whilst deeply moisturising the nail cuticles, nail bed and plates. Try to keep hands hydrated at least twice a day for soft skin and healthy nails and apply a cuticle oil to assist with hard-cracked nails.”
Now that you’ve got nailcare down, you can have fun with polishes. Courtney recommends glitter varnish from Butter London, which can be applied quickly before a night out.
But whatever you do – have fun!
“In our world we see colour, loads of colour,” she said. “Over the years, studies have shown that we react to colours on multiple levels, whether social or cultural. If ever I need a bit of a boost, I always try some new nail art from ‘Deco it’ or I select a classic shade, such as red which exudes energy and confidence. Try switching up your colours and see how your mood changes. Your key to happiness might be a lot more simple than you think!”
