Dyer couldn’t get “nut” around working with June Brown

The Vic’s new landlord has confessed he was star-struck to be sharing scenes in Eastenders with Dot Cotton

Speaking at an event to launch the Christmas episodes of the BBC1 soap, Dyer – whose first scene will be on Christmas Day as new Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter – admitted that he was daunted to be acting opposite the woman who since 1985 has played the iconic role of chain-smoking Dot Branning:

“It’s harder doing it in the launderette with her because that’s her little manor. When I had my scene in there I just could not get my nut round it. You’re looking at her little face, and you’re like ‘there she is’. And she’s grafting, she’s 86 and she’s so on it.”

June Brown recently admitted that she only does three to four days a week on the soap, but that playing Dot often gives her more energy.

“Although I may say I’m tired, as soon as I get on that set I’m filled with energy.”

She also said Dot has continued as a character so long because she reminds everyone of someone they know: “People say to me, ‘You’re so like the woman in the shop down the road’, and, ‘You’re so like my auntie’,” she told the Yorkshire Evening Post.
