Republic of Ireland international Stephanie Roche has beaten the likes of Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to become one of ten nominees for the 2014 Puskas Award – FIFA Goal of the Year.
Roche, who now plays in France, joins Tim Cahill, Robin van Persie and Diego Costa on the list for her goal she scored in the Irish Women’s Championship last October.
While playing for Peamount United against Wexford Youths, Roche received the ball on the edge of the box and with three brief touches – never letting the ball drop to the ground – fires a world-class volley into the back of the net.
The ten nominees will be whittled down to a three-person shortlist on December 1 and Roche told RTE Sport of her excitement at being selected.
“I am absolutely delighted to have been nominated for FIFA’s best goal of the year.
“Obviously, it was a big surprise but it is a great boost, not only for myself, but for women’s football and particularly the Women’s National League. It’s a great feeling to see myself on the list.”
