Relaxing should be part of everybody’s daily routine. In reality though, most of us don’t have the time for pricey beauty treatments. But that doesn’t always have to be the case!

Instead of heading to the spa next time you have a spare hour, try making your own herbal bath tea.

By incorporating dried herbs to your bath, you can take it up a notch and get all the benefits of hydrotherapy and aromatherapy in one fell swoop.

Herbal bath tea is a great alternative to bath salts or soaps – think of it as a tea bag for your bath instead of your favourite mug. Some people opt to just dump the loose tea into a bathtub, which can be tough to clean and wreak havoc on your drain. However, if you put the tea in a bag, it will be less messy and easier to clean up.

To make herbal bath tea, you’ll need a bag to put it in – re-sealable tea bags, muslin bags, or other natural porous fabric. You can even use a cheesecloth or coffee filter if you have that in your pantry.

Next is the fun part – picking out your loose leaf herbal teas. If you want something calming, lavender, chamomile and linden are all teas that help relax and soothe your body after a stressful day. If you want something completely different, use invigorating peppermint or spearmint. And for those who are looking to heal any holiday cooking-related injuries, teas such as rose, calendula, rosemary, plantain, and elder flower are all anti-inflammatory and useful for cell-regeneration.

If you want to add in other items to help you soothe your skin, ingredients such as sea salt, Epsom salts, baking soda, powdered milk and oats are great additions to the herbal bath teas.

Mix the teas of your choosing in a bowl, then fill up the tea bag with your herbal mixture. The amount is very flexible, so you can basically put in as much or as little as you like. Tie it up with yarn, and you’re ready to dip! To use the herbal bath tea, place the bag into the tub while it fills with hot water and leave in for the duration of your bath. Another option is to tie the bag under the faucet so the water will go through the herbs. Let the herbs soak into your body to nourish your skin and calm your mind as the days stress melts away.
