Death of country star Ray Price, 87

By Madeline O’Connor

The singer has died aged 87 of pancreatic cancer at his Texas ranch

Ray Price, famous for the song Crazy Arms, had only returned to his ranch a matter of days ago. He stopped treatment for the disease on Thursday last, after it was revealed the cancer had spread.

His wife, Janie Price, said her husband’s “final message” to his fans had been: “I love my fans and have devoted my life to reaching out to them. I appreciate their support all these years, and I hope I haven’t let them down. I am at peace. I love Jesus. I’m going to be just fine. Don’t worry about me. I’ll see you again one day.”

The country music legend  earlier this month told Rolling Stone magazine: “I just like what I’ve done and how it’s worked out, and it’s been great. I haven’t lost my voice, thank God for that.”

Price, who was a close friend of the late Hank Williams, started Willie Nelson off in music, giving him a job as his bass player on tour.

He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1996.
