Birmingham-born Irish man Dan Martin defeated Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins in last week’s Tour of Catalonia to become just the second Irish man ever to record victory on the event.
Martin, 26, is son of former British Olympic Cyclist Neil Martin and Maria Roche, a sister of Irish cycling hero Stephen Roche. His father cycled for Britain during the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Martin Jr won the British National Junior Championship in 2004 before declaring for Ireland and has been forging a relatively successful professional career with the Garmin-Sharp squad since.
Sunday’s win was his biggest success to date. Apart from winning this major tour in the run up to the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in the summer, the fact that Wiggins finished fifth shows just how much Martin has come on in recent years.
