Coronation Street stars are reportedly concerned they will be “worked to the bone”

It was announced on Wednesday (29Jun16) that the ITV soap will be extending from five to six episodes a week from 2017. While the revelation was met with delight from fans of the show, the cast and crew are apparently worried about the workload involved in producing another 30 minute episode per week, and are hoping that the staff on the show will be dramatically increased.

“They believe many more cast will need to be hired to cope, if they don’t then the existing cast are going to be worked to the bone to fill the extra half an hour, and it’s the same with the crew,” a source told The Sun newspaper.

“The cast fear that going to an extra episode will bore fans. Six episodes a week, 52 weeks a year leaves no feeling of ‘wanting more’.”

However, bosses promised staff on the show that they would be making more hires to cope with the extra work. They sent an email to all involved on the soap on Wednesday ahead of the news being publicly announced.

“We’ll be able to strengthen and increase our teams right across the board to support making the additional episodes,” the email read.

“It will also enable us to enhance all the positive things we currently do and are rightly proud of, such as training, apprenticeships, social inclusion, and sustainability.”

The publication also reports that the younger stars of the show are looking at how the news can be used to their advantage in terms of requesting a pay rise.

Newcomers like Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany Platt, apparently earn around £40,000 a year – up to six times less than veteran stars such as Bill Roache – but the source added that the new deal means there will be more opportunity to “boost their earnings”.
