Champs lay down a marker

Tir Chonaill Gaels 1-11, Kingdom Kerry Gaels 0-07

Patrick Keane.

In a rematch of last year’s county final, history repeated itself at Ruislip on Saturday as Tir Chonaill Gaels kicked off their title defence with a solid if unspectacular win over Kingdom Kerry Gaels.

However, the Kingdom weren’t without their chances as things didn’t start well for the Greenford club when Noel Dunning’s side bombed forward and earned themselves an early penalty just five minutes into the game. Up stepped Kyrle Holland to blast the ball against the post and wide wide of the mark.

The Kingdom would pay for this missed opportunity as Tir Chonaill up the tempo and strung together a four-point spree led by dangerous corner forward Kevin McMenamin and Benny O’Reilly. McMenamin would have a prosperous afternoon scoring six points, two of whichcoming from free positions.
