Brendan Cole has reportedly been ruled out of a judging role on Strictly Come Dancing because he’s “too cocky”.

The 40-year-old professional dancer was one of the names thought to be in line to replace Len Goodman when he leaves the show after this year’s (16) series. However, bosses are now said to be leaning towards enlisting Brendan’s fellow professional Anton du Beke for the role.

“Brendan is one of the show’s most popular dancers but his outwardly confident nature would cause problems on the panel,” a source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper. “He’d certainly be up for the role given his experience, but Anton is the hot favourite.

“His critiques would go down well with both contestants and viewers watching at home. Unlike the X Factor, bickering judges isn’t as appealing for fans of Strictly.”

Len is also believed to have thrown his backing behind Anton to replace him on the panel when he leaves after 12 years of the BBC programme.

While Brendan’s judging skills proved successful on the New Zealand version of the show, he has hit headlines on numerous occasions during his time on Strictly.

Speaking of the judging panel after being voted off of last year’s show with partner Kirsty Gallacher, Anton said: “They all p**s me off from time to time.”

Meanwhile, there has been speculation that BBC bosses could get another female judge to complete the panel, in line with the diversity and inclusion strategy they launched in April (16) to have an equal spread of genders across their flagship shows.

Other names in the ring for the judging position including former professional dancers on the show Karen Hardy and Erin Boag while ex judge Arlene Phillips and It Takes Two presenter Zoe Ball have also been linked to the role.
