Boyle stars in festive offering The Christmas Candle

By Shelley Marsden

Starring Britain’s Got Talent winner Susan Boyle in her first film role, festive offering The Christmas Candle (U) is in UK cinemas from December 13.

Nothing out of the ordinary ever happens in the small village of Gladbury – except at Christmas.

Legend has it that every twenty-five years an angel visits the village candle-maker and touches a single candle. Whoever lights the Christmas Candle will see their request granted on Christmas Eve.

But in 1890 at the dawn of the modern age all that is about to change. With the arrival of David Richmond (Hans Matheson), a skeptical young minister, Gladbury’s humble candle-maker Edward Haddington (Sylvester McCoy), must fight to preserve his family’s legacy.

When the Christmas Candle goes missing, the miraculous and the human collide in the most astonishing Christmas the town of Gladbury has ever seen.

The Christmas Candle is directed by John Stephenson (Five Children and It) and stars Hans Matheson (Clash of the Titans, Sherlock Holmes), Samantha Barks (Les Miserables) and Lesley Manville (Another Year, Vera Drake).

Also starring are Sylvester McCoy (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Doctor Who), John Hannah (The Mummy, Four Weddings and A Funeral) and Barbara Flynn (Miss Potter, The Borgias) with James Cosmo (Braveheart, Game of Thrones) and – in her first film role – Susan Boyle.

The idea for the film was born several years ago when best-selling American author and preacher Max Lucado approached producer Tom Newman about an idea he was mulling over. “I had made a few children’s films with Max Lucado when he told me his idea for the story of The Christmas Candle,” explains producer Tom Newman. “I fell in love with the story and thought it was a wonderful concept. I said if you write it I’ll make it into a movie!”
