Tips on how to get those iconic Bowie looks

The music world lost a true icon when David Bowie passed away following a secret 18-month battle with cancer on 10 January 2016.

But it isn’t just his sound people will miss; the musician proved a true pioneer in the world of fashion and beauty.

Countless celebrities have taken inspiration from him over the years, and if you’re a fan, we think you should pay homage with your make-up.

One of Bowie’s most iconic looks is of his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. Everyone recognises the red and blue lightning bolt across his face, clashing with his bright ginger hair, but we have a more subtle way to approach this.

To begin with, you need to make your face a shade paler – after all, he was known as the Thin White Duke with his ‘snow white tan’. Rather than investing in an expensive powder or hitting your local fancy dress shop, just pick up a budget compact powder a shade or two paler than your usual colour. Natural Collection Pressed Powder or Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder are both reliable options – simply apply after rubbing in a good layer of primer to keep things in place.

But we can’t ignore the pink tint to Bowie’s alter ego’s face, which can be brought to life with a good blusher. Sleek MakeUp Blush Pink Lemonade Blush By 3 contains three feminine shades to sweep onto your cheeks and create definition.

Next, we move onto the eyes. Don’t worry; we’re not going to suggest mixing red and blue here. We’ll stick with the second colour, as it’s a more wearable option.

Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eyeshadow Palette has a gorgeous turquoise option and other shades to complement, or pick up solo products like Max Factor Wild Eyeshadow Pot in Turquoise Fury or MUA Matte Eyeshadow in Cornflower Blue.

Apply quite far up your eyelid, as you want to get noticed, and blend the edges with a neutral eyeshadow to relax things a little.

Then come the lips, where you have two options – pillar box red will certainly make a statement, with products like MAC Ruby Woo Lipstick and YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick famed for their bold finishes.

An orangey tint would work well here too thanks to Ziggy’s bright locks, so you could also reach for Topshop Infrared or lip paint Rimmel Apocalips in Orange-ology.

When you’re done, put on your red shoes and dance the blues!
