Alexandra Block, the Hayes-born kickboxer, claimed silver in last week’s WAKO International University Kickboxing Championships in Russia.
Representing Sligo IT in the -60kg light contact division, Block beat the hosting country’s Maria Zarharova convincingly to set up a final against Valeriya Kolosheina.
In a close final, she just missed out on gold to Kolosheina but earned the podium place that she had been aiming for.
Her university and club mate Dessie Leonard earned himself two golds, beating Aleksander Kirilin in continuous fighting and beat three Russian hopefuls on his way to gold in the points fighting, beating Tarlan Ramazanov 18-13.
In light of last week’s interview with Alexandra Block, it needs to be corrected where it was written that the Irish Sport Council do not recognise kickboxing as a sport. The Irish Sport Council do recognise it as a sport, but as it is not an Olympic Sport there is no fundraising available to athletes who compete in it.
