Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street closed its doors for €1 million refurbishment this afternoon, closing for six months in total.

As previously announced, 140 staff are to be laid off, and the company plan to hire 70 more once it reopens.

It is the most significant change in the history of the café, originally opened in 1927, and signals a need to ‘secure its long term future’.

The newly refurbished Bewley’s will have its seating capacity halved and a narrower menu to counteract its €1.5 million rent burden which is seeing it at a €1.2 million loss per year.
