The day that changed everything

Award-winning drama out on DVD By Shelley Marsden - 03/02/10

The day that changed everything

HILLSBOROUGH (NETWORK, £15.99) hristopher Eccleston and the great Ricky Tomlinson take the leads in this BAFTA award-winning ITV drama, out now on DVD. The release comes 20 years after the tragedy, and in the wake of the UK government’s decision to release official documents relating to the disaster.

Written by Jimmy McGovern (Cracker, The Street), Hillsborough is an emotionally powerful and highly acclaimed dramatisation of the personal grief and public issues in the wake of the 1989 stadium disaster, in which 96 Liverpool FC fans were crushed to death at an FA cup semi-final match against Nottingham Forest.

Following the stories of three families in particular, from the initial euphoria of match day to the legal wrangles that followed the disaster, Hillsborough presents a raw, honest portrayal of the campaign for truth within a culture of closed ranks and cover-ups.

The drama also seeks to dismantle damaging lies regarding fans’ conduct, perpetuated by sections of the press and seen by McGovern and others as symptomatic of an ongoing vilification of the working class within British media. Initially broadcast in 1996, Hillsborough won countless awards, including a BAFTA for best Single Drama and the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain award for best Play.

This is not only great drama, it reminds us of a lesson we should never forget.
