Aidan's mare

It was, all in all, a very disappointing weekend for Ballydoyle maestro, Aidan O'Brien at this year's big Breeders' Cup meeting at Santa Anita in California. By Colm Murray - 11/11/09

The whole affair got off to such a good start, however, as early on Friday evening Man Of Iron ran out the somewhat surprising 13/2 winner of the Marathon event as he became the recipient of a huge Johnny Murtagh drive in the closing stages to get up close home and win by the proverbial whisker.

At that stage, the omens were good for the strong Ballydoyle contingent, which was comprised entirely of two and three-year-olds. Unfortunately, however, it was to be downhill all the way from there.

The trainer himself had intimated that Lilly Langtry represented one of his very best chances of success at this year's renewal, but she proved a huge disappointment as she never really landed a blow on Friday night in her fillies race.

She faded from quite some way out and, in the end, finished completely out of the reckoning. Nothing daunted, however, we motored into Saturday happy in the knowledge that we had some Irish aces up our sleeves in the form of Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman, while perhaps the likes of Alfred Nobel, Beethoven, and Viscount Nelson, could also land some telling blows in their respective races. But it was not to be!
