Happy being sad
DID anyone else hear Morrissey the other day on Desert Island Discs? Maybe it's an age thing, but I think the grumpy star could actually be mellowing out and enjoying life! - 01/12/09
He told Kirsty Young on the BBC Radio 4 programme that if you reach 50 and you are not at one with yourself, then there’s something seriously wrong
OK, so the records he chose weren’t exactly rainbows and roses (he chose a lot of early punk tracks, from the Ramones to the Velvet Underground to the New York Dolls), but he did choose Marianne Faithful's 1965 hit, Come and Stay with Me – which is a fairly happy tune!.
But as is so often the case with this brilliant programme, it wasn’t so much the songs he chose as the interview he gave which was revealing.
He told Young that "nothing comforts me" – a typically dark statement from the Manchester-Irishman, but it seemed in a strange way that he took comfort from his being unconventional.
He may be chilling out in his ‘old’ age, but Morrissey has no intention of settling down. He told Young he didn’t’ want to be part of a “happy couple” with his family photos sitting above the TV.
The singer said a pattern has emerged of himself and he was quite happy to follow that path and rail against the norms of society. In other words, he’s miserable and he’s quite happy to stay that way. Brilliant…
