Epilepsy doctor to leave post
Parent's concern over plans to reduce service for vulnerbale children - 25/11/09
IT IS with huge regret that I learned of the impending departure of Dr Ruby Schwartz, epilepsy/neurodisability consultant paediatrician from Central Middlesex Hospital (pictured) from 1st January 2010.
As Dr Scwhartz is the only epilepsy specialist in Brent, she has 300 paediatric patients under her care. These children will no longer have a specialist service and this situation is totally unacceptable. She currently runs the hospital clinic, as well as four special school clinics.
I strongly urge other parents/carers/schools to voice their concern as a matter of urgency before it is too late, and try to save this invaluable post. Our main concern is to have somebody in situ to continue with this provision, which has taken 23 years to build up.
It is greatly disruptive to children and especially special needs children to have such major changes in their care, and to lose the school clinic to which they have become accustomed in a relaxed familiar environment, and one where they are accepted.
If cuts need to be made, then surely dealing such a severe blow to the most vulnerable in society, many of whom do not have a voice is inappropriate. Surely savings could be made elsewhere?
Furthermore, it is my understanding that the general children’s ward at CMH is to have its services vastly reduced, with no out-of-hours paediatrician available, and the ward being closed daily at 10pm.
An anxious parent,
North London.
