Half of NI water board get sack
Northern Ireland's Regional Development Minister has sacked half the board of Northern Ireland Water as the result of an investigation into contractual practices. By Shelley Marsden - 12/03/10
Conor Murphy said he made the move to sack the Chairman of the body and three other board members, as 'there had been a serious breakdown in governance ...in relation to contract approvals'.
Northern Ireland Water, which was established in 2007 to take the place of the Water Service, providing water supplies and sewerage.
It should have managed the introduction of direct household water charges, but this responsibility has been deferred by MLAs.
Mr Murphy said in a statement that he will 'take firm action to fully address the recommendations within the report'.
The current Chief Executive of NIW replied by promising to take 'extremely seriously' his responsibility to making sure the issues within the body are 'addressed as a matter of urgency'.
