Girls wear the trousers at Catholic school
Girl power at one Catholic girl's school is alive and well, as demands from female pupils to wear trousers have finally been met. By Madeline O'Connor - 08/02/10
St Mary’s Catholic High School in West Croydon has lifted a 140-year ban on girls wearing trousers, allowing its female students to wear the attire in winter months.
Following the rule change Monday last, about half of the school’s 400 female pupils switched to trousers, with local shops quickly running out of stock.
Headteacher Ejiro Ughwujabo said: “The students have changed a time-old tradition through perseverance, heart and determination. I admire them for that.”
