Jennifer Cardy was nine when she was abducted in August 1981 from the village of Ballinderry, near Lisburn in Co Antrim, while she was cycling.
The little girl’s body was discovered by fishermen nearly a week later at a dam not far away.
The PSNI confirmed that a man in England has been served with a summons charging him with the murder.
It is believed he will appear in court at a later date.
