Charity group St Vincent De Paul says it is gearing up for an avalanche of calls in the run-up to Christmas.

The society has already seen an increase - of up to 30% - in requests for help this year, as families across the country struggle financially.

The charity, which is launching its annual Christmas appeal this morning, is warning that the loss of Christmas bonuses in the upcoming Budget is going to put many households under pressure
