Stars come out for hospice re-opening
Impressionist Jon Culshaw and actor Andrew Sachs support Marie Curie Hospice, Hampstead By Angela Sammon - 27/11/09
Stars and supporters were out in force last week to celebrate the refurbishment of the Marie Curie Hospice in Hampstead.
Supporters including impressionist and Irish World Award winner Jon Culshaw, Andrew Sachs, and Glenda Jackson MP celebrated the opening following a £3.8m refurbishment.
Irish publican and keen fundraiser, Andrew Carey of the Haverstock Arms in Hampstead created cause for celebration when he presented a further cheque for £4k on the day.
Mr Carey had already succeeded in raising thousands of pounds for the refurbishment through a variety of events, including a fundraising dinner at the Emirates Stadium last year. The event was widely supported by the London-Irish community.
Trevor Pears, trustee of the Family Pears Family Trust, Richard Desmond, Chairman of Northern & Shell and Thomas Hughes-Hallett, Chief Executive of Marie Curie Cancer Care were also on hand to cut the ribbon.
The Marie Curie Hospice remained open throughout its refurbishment, which included converting the hospice’s multi-occupancy wards into 26 single en suite rooms with patient controlled lighting, heating, TV and internet access. Each room also features unique pieces of art commissioned for the project.
