Ireland in baby boy boom
There are more little boys arriving into the world in Ireland than there are girls, and according to the experts, it's because dads have a lot of sperm. By Shelley Marsden - 20/11/09
The Republic’s Central Statistics Office reveals that male births have consistently outnumbered those of girls every year since 2000.
Last year 36,472 girls were born, but the boom in the male population continued apace, with 38,593 males born.
As life expectancy increases, however, the girls are more likely to outlive the boys.
A baby boy born in 2006 is expected to live 76.8 years, while for girls it is 86.6 years and that longevity is set to increase in the coming decades.
Researchers say women are more likely to give birth to boys if they have more brothers, but more likely to have daughters if they have more sisters.
