Van Booy wins Frank O'Connor Award
The Frank O'Connor Short Story Award has been won by Simon Van Booy. By Shelley Marsden - 21/09/09
Selected from the shortlist of six, Van Booy won the short story prize - the world's oldest and richest award for a collection of short stories - for his acclaimed collection ‘Love Begins in Winter’ (published by Beautiful Books, 11th June 2009).
The New York born author, whose mother was Irish, will receive a cheque for €35,000.
The winner was announced in Cork yesterday, at the closing ceremony of the tenth Frank O'Connor International Short Story Festival.
Previous winners have included Haruki Murakami, Miranda July, Jhumpa Lahiri and Yiyun Li.
Notable names that missed the shortlist this year include Booker winner Kazuo Ishiguro, Orange Prize winner Chimanda Ngozi Adiche, veteran short story authors Ali Smith, Mary Gaitskill and James Lasdun and Sana Krasikov.
