How sweet the sound

Kate Rusby releases ‘Sweet Bells', an album of South Yorkshire carols… By Shelley Marsden - 15/12/09

How sweet the sound

Yorkshire lass Kate Rusby is honing in on the traditions of her own part of England for this festive offering. ‘Sweet Bells’ is a collection of South Yorkshire Christmas carols, released on her own label, Pure Records.

Carol singing in South Yorkshire has a long and strong tradition of carol singing, which kicks in, believe it or not, as early as the beginning of November.

Drop in of a Sunday lunchtime, and there are hundreds of carollers crammed into various cosy pubs in the area to partake in the unabashed and wonderfully innocent joy of carol singing.

What is really the representation of an oral tradition has been passed down and has evolved from generation to generation, with roots dating back over 200 years.

Released originally in Decembr 2009, this album has now been re-packaged and re-released for our listening pleasure. Nothing could be more festive, and yet so unique.

Kate Rusby is currently on a tour of the UK, calling in at Birmingham Town Hall on Thurs Dec 19 (0121 780 333), and the Pyramid & Parr Hall, Warrington on Sat Dec 12 (01925 442345).
