Major exhibition of Rita Duffy's work approaches Ulster from a different angle By staff reporter - 01/04/08

First Irish showing for controversial artist Duffy

Law enforcement in Northern Ireland, and one of the most iconic and controversial structures associated with the ‘Troubles’ – are just two of the themes being explored in a thought provoking exhibition of works by Rita Duffy – which will be shown in Ireland for the first time this month.

Gormley’s Fine Art, located in Dublin’s South Frederick Street will host the exhibition, which runs from 3rd – 20th April. This is the first time in three years that a major collection of Rita’s evocative work will be on show in the capital.

Titled 'Remnant', the exhibition examines the country’s social and political landscape, and provides a contemporary voice for the Troubles in Northern Ireland. It is a direct response to both the artist’s personal and shared experiences.

A significant part of the works focuses on the Ulster Defence Regiment - an organisation which was frequently viewed as having a controversial role in law enforcement – and also the north/south border watchtowers, which continue to carry political resonance for many.

Rita who is also President of the Royal Ulster Academy of Art explains, “I feel the timing of the exhibition is important – and highlights the creative journey I have taken from looking at the watchtowers in South Armagh. This began my thinking about how art can transform something, which is seen as a contentious political symbol into something visionary, which can spark inspiration and transformation in society.

“Also I feel at this time of political change and transformation in Northern Ireland – the watchtowers are very significant as they were so visual on the borders – an ancient location to the gateway to Ulster – and now with the new road linking Belfast and Dublin the timing again becomes relevant.”

Oliver Gormley of Gormley’s Fine Art said, “We are delighted to be hosting Rita’s exhibition in our Dublin Gallery, as there hasn’t been a showing of her work in Dublin in several years. It is recognised that an Irish art collection is not complete without a Duffy piece – and works from this exhibition are no exception. Such is the evocative and narrative nature of her work we have already had strong interest from collectors and buyers across Ireland – and anticipate a similar response from avid art lovers.”
