We celebrated 21 years with a spectacular night at The Irish World Awards. By Mary McNulty - 26/02/08
STARS from stage and screen, the literary and music worlds, sport and the Irish community throughout Britain gathered in a packed Galtymore Dance Hall in London on Monday for the 21st annual Irish World Awards.
Hosted by Irish World veteran racing columnist and RTE sports anchorman, Colm Murray the awards recognised the great and the good from the business community, as well as those who work tirelessly for the good of others.
All of the winning artists entertained a celebrity-packed audience with great live performances on the night. As always the Irish World Awards reflected the variety of Irish talent.
For their contribution to music, The Fureys received a Lifetime Achievement award. There was an award too for Jon Culshaw, witty impressionist and star of “Dead Ringers” on both television and radio.
Members of the Miami Showband were welcomed into the Irish World’s Hall Of Fame with a special award, with Vince Power receiving an Award for his Contribution to the Music Industry.
John McNicholl, Imelda May, Jan O'Driscoll, Niamh Ni Charra, Tommy Fleming all received Awards in the singing categories with The Delorentos, receiving the Award for Best New Band.
There was a Lifetime Achievement Award for Eileen King, while Neil Fetherstonhaugh and Steve Travers received the Literary Award.
Established and new actors Stephen Mangan and Robert Powell were greeted warmly by the audience at the Galtymore as they received their awards.
