One in three Irish restaurants may close

The Restaurants Association of Ireland has given a warning that more than 20,000 jobs are at risk in the catering business.

The Association says 80% of its members are making a loss, and one in three restaurants could close their doors in the next six months with a potential loss of €700m to the Irish economy.

The Association is urging the Government to take a variety of steps to retain the viability of the sector – including, it is believed, a reduction in the minimum wage and a drop in VAT on drink in restaurants.
