Ar Ais Aris Back Again

Christy Evans meets Dr Marcas Mac Domhnaill – one-time Londoner who is now Europe’s most westerly dentist

As Gaeilge

Saolaíodh an dochtúir Marcas Mac Domhnaill i gContae Chorcaí. D’fhoghlaim Marcas an fhiaclóireacht i Londain. Anois, tá sé ina chónaí i nDún Chaoin i gCorca Dhuibhne lena theaghlach. Deirtear gurab é an fiaclóir is iargúltaí san Eoraip é. Beidh Marcas ar ais arís go luath.

Deir Marcas “Beidh coláiste Gaeilge ar siúl i dTintern sa Bhreatain Bheag. Beidh ranganna Gaeilge, ceol, siúlóidí, bia blasta agus radharcra deas ann”. Tá mainistir álainn i dTintern chomh maith. Ba iad na manaigh Cistéirseacha a bhunaigh an Mainistir Tintern.

Bhí an mhainistir tiomnaithe don Mhaighdean Mhuire. Bhídís gnóthach ag bácáil agus ag feirmeoireacht. D’ólaidís 4.5 litear (galún amháin) beorach gach lá. Ba ionad léinn, tráchtála, taise agus na healaíonn é, Tintern ar feadh níos mó ná 400 bliain.

Ar an drochuair, loit saighdiúirí Tintern ar an 3ú Meán Fómhair 1536. Rinneadh smidiríní de dealbh na Maighdine Mhuire. Goideadh 13.3 kg (30 lbs) de airgid. Chuaigh an sráidbhaile Tintern i mbochtaineacht.

Deir Marcas “Inniu, níl ach cuid bheag de Tintern fágtha. Mar sin féin, is áit álainn iontach é gur fiú cuairt a thabhairt air”. Le haghaidh tuilleadh eolais ar an nGaeilge, dean teagmhail le ancolaiste@aol.com

In English

Dr Marcas Mac Domhnaill was born in County Cork. Marcas studied dentistry in London but now lives in Dunquin at the very end of the Dingle Peninsula with his family. He is officially Europe’s most westerly dentist. Marcas will be back in Britain again soon.

He explains “There will be an Irish language college at Tintern in Wales. There will be Irish classes, live music, walks, delicious food and fantastic scenery”. Tintern also has a beautiful abbey. It was founded by Cistercian monks.

The abbey was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monks worked hard baking and farming. They drank 4.5 litres (one gallon) of beer each every day. Tintern was a centre for learning, commerce, compassion and the arts for over four hundred years.

Unfortunately, soldiers looted the abbey on the 3rd of September 1536. The statue of the Virgin Mary was smashed into many pieces. 13.3 kg (30lbs) of silver was stolen. The Tintern area fell into poverty.

Marcas says “Today, only a few forlorn ruins are left of the abbey. Even so, it’s a beautiful place to visit”.
