In touch with reality

“I pinch myself every day of my life,” reveals Amy Childs. “It’s amazing. I’m a really lucky girl: Having my own salon, having my own boutique, having an amazing business, being on a show like The Only Way Is Essex and then Celebrity Big Brother, then my own TV show, I pinch myself every day. I’m so glad that I’m like that because if you weren’t like that you might start getting really big headed, and I’m not big headed at all.”

It was just over two years ago that The Only Way Is Essex was launched on ITV. It has since beaten Downton Abbey to a BAFTA and been so successful that many imitations have followed (Made in Chelsea, The Valleys, Geordie Shore, Tallafornia). And although you could have walked past them without thinking anything of it, the show catapulted Amy Childs, Mark Wright and the rest of the cast into the public eye. Amy remembers how quick it all happened: “My twitter went absolutely mental that night it first came on TV and then I went to Lakeside (shopping centre) in Essex and people were stopping me: ‘Oh my God, can I have a picture?’ And I was like: ‘This is not happening to me’. So it was literally overnight.”

Since leaving the reality show after two series, Amy has appeared on Celebrity Big Brother, her own Channel 5 reality show It’s All About Amy, launched her own clothing range, fragrance, lashes, tanning range and beauty salon. Can she believe just what has happened in the last two years? “Oh my God, not at all. When I told people I was going to do a show, everyone was like: ‘Amy you shouldn’t do it, you’ve got a really good job’. I was a beautician outside of Essex and I absolutely loved it. I said: ‘You know what? I’m gonna give it a go’, and did it and this is how my life’s changed and I’m loving it.”

While advised her not to take part in the reality show, ironically more advised her against quitting the show that had made her a household name: “They all said: ‘Amy, that’s the wrong thing to do. You leave TOWIE and then you’re gonna be doing nothing’. And I was like: ‘No, I really believe that I’m going to do well with leaving TOWIE’.”

And her confidence was certainly well placed. The Essex stunner travels to Ireland in the coming weeks to promote her Amy Childs lashes, tan and perfume, and she reveals to The Irish World that this is where she has heritage: “I’m ¼ Irish. My mum’s mum is Irish, County Mayo. I went to Ireland a couple of months ago, I absolutely loved it and I had such a laugh there. I can’t wait to come back.”

Soon after quitting TOWIE, Amy walked into the Celebrity Big Brother House where her housemates included Tara Reid, Paddy Doherty, Kerry Katona, Sally Bercow and those terrible twins, Jedward. The Big Brother house tends to unmask any fakes and not even John and Edward could make down to earth Amy lose her rag: “Do you know what? I’m quite a patient person. They were like my little brothers. I did say: ‘Boys, you’ve got to calm down a bit’. I absolutely loved having them in there. It was a really good thing for me to do, Big Brother because you get to know and understand people. Jedward were absolutely crazy I had a laugh with them and I’ll never forget them and they still talk to me now. We catch up a lot so it’s amazing.”
