With the summer fast approaching and temperatures heating up, it can be tempting to air dry your hair rather than spending hours blowdrying your locks to perfection.

But while standard air drying can sometimes leave tresses flat and lifeless, especially if you have fine hair, there are some tips and tricks you can follow to inject some life into your barnet without reaching for the hairdryer.

Of course, it’s a well-known fact that you shouldn’t go to bed with wet hair – it’s not the best thing for your health. But if you’re lusting after beachy waves, then prepping hair while it’s wet before bed is the perfect way to get this look.

Towel dry your hair when it’s freshly washed and brush out. Then divide into sections and start plaiting. The amount of hair per plait and the tightness of the braid will determine the finished appearance – go for a looser one if you want a surf-y look or try it tight if you are getting your inspiration from the ‘80s. It’s best to do this an hour or so before bed so your hair has some time to dry off before you hit the pillow.

Sleep rollers are another popular choice for many, but the truth is that you can get a similar result with what you’ve already got at home. For curls, rather than waves, twist the hair and then wind it back on itself to make lots of buns all over your head. In the morning, once you remove the bands or pins, your hair will look freshly curled.

If you struggle with instantly greasy hair after a night’s sleep, spritz with some dry shampoo to freshen up. And if you prefer a more defined look, then don’t brush too rigorously after removing the bands. For a more relaxed look, brush through and then use some salt spray to finish off that beachy ‘do. Not only will it give your hair the perfect look for the beach, they usually smell of summer too – bonus!
