Irish actor Aidan Turner and David Tennant will compete against each other for the top acting prize at Britain’s National Television Awards.

The Hobbit star and the former Doctor Who have earned nods for Drama Performance for their roles in Poldark and crime drama Broadchurch respectively, and they will also go up against Sheridan Smith for police series Black Work and Suranne Jones for Doctor Foster.

Aidan Turner, born in Dublin, is best known for his roles as Kíli in the three-part fantasy film The Hobbit and John Mitchell in the supernatural drama series Being Human.

Turner’s television acting career began in 2007 with a guest appearance on The Tudors.

He previously dated Charlene McKenna and Lenora Crichlow, both of whom starred in the TV show Being Human with him. In November 2015, Turner announced his separation from Tony-nominated actress Sarah Greene, his girlfriend of five years.

The medical drama Black Work and Poldark also scored nominations on Tuesday’s (05 Jan 16) shortlist, and will face competition from robot thriller Humans and Ordinary Lies for the New Drama prize.

Downton Abbey, which concluded in the U.K. over the festive season (15), is up for the Drama award alongside Doctor Who, Broadchurch and medical series Casualty, while Game of Thrones, Orange is the New Black, and The Big Bang Theory are nominated for best international series.

British hardman Danny Dyer landed a nod for Serial Drama Performance for soap opera EastEnders, pop star Shayne Ward earned a Newcomer nod for his role in Coronation Street, and motoring show Top Gear is up for the Factual Entertainment prize, despite a hosting reshuffle in 2015.

The winners, which will be decided by public vote, will be announced at London’s O2 Arena on 20 January (16).
