1- Shane MacGowan

By David Hennessy

Shane MacGowan will headline at a fundraiser for one of his former bandmates this Sunday July 6.

Paul “Mad Dog” McGuinness played guitar with Shane MacGowan in Shane MacGowan and The Popes from 1998 to 2006. He also reformed The Popes without MacGowan when the former Pogues singer left the band after the death of founding member Tom McManamon.

Paul suffered a serious brain injury when he was left in a coma after a car accident last November. He is making progress with recovery in Homerton Hospital but has a long road ahead of him. All proceeds from the event will help defray Paul’s expenses as he undergoes continuing rehabilitation.

Other acts to perform include Joe Rooney, a stand up comic known for playing Fr Damo in Father Ted, Hungry Grass, London Lasses, Juno’s Daughter, The Hog and Whiskey Mick and Crooked Jacks.

Dave Lally, event organiser and close friend of Paul’s, told The Irish World: “The support has been great, all the bands are generously giving all their time.

“Paul has come on leaps and bounds in the last eight months but still there is a long road ahead. He’s still in the brain injury ward, he is improving.

“He’s trying to write songs again, that’s all coming back to him. He is thinking about music and the future.

“Fingers crossed he’ll get to that place where he was before the crash.

“God Bless You Paul “Mad Dog” McGuinness. You are always in our thoughts.”

Dave says he believes the large crowd of well wishers in the small space could be just too overwhelming for Paul and so it is best if Paul himself does not attend on Sunday. Nora Mulready of Irish Elders Network plays with Juno’s Daughter.

“We support the proposal by the Irish Elderly Advice Network to found the pioneering National Centre for Older Irish People in the Kennedy Hall. We support this campaign,” Dave added.

Dave Lally and Tom Creagh organised the event and would like to thank Éibhleann McMahon, Nora Mulready, Paul McCluskey, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Mary McGuinness, Andy Nolan, Brian Kelly, Bob Dowling, Shane MacGowan and Olan Clarke as well as all musicians who will play on the night.

Shane MacGowan & Friends headline the fundraiser in aid of Paul “Mad Dog” McGuinness. Shane’s band includes Andy Nolan of The BibleCode Sundays.

The event begins at 6pm at Underworld in Camden. Places are limited and first come, first served.
