Birmingham-born Irish cyclist Dan Martin has confirmed that he will not contest this year’s Tour de France.

Martin made history last year, when he became the first Irishman, since his uncle, to win a stage on The Tour.

This year turned to disaster when he crashed out of the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia on the streets of Belfast.

The subsequent broken collar bone ruled him out of all the pre Tour de France preparatory races.

Since the crash he has contested only a handful of charity-style events and took the decision last week to skip the Tour to allow himself time to get back to full fitness.

He will contest Sunday’s Irish National Road Race championships in Westmeath where he will face defending champion, Liverpool-born Irishman Matt Brammeier.
