CHARISMATIC RTÉ Newscaster Aengus Mac Grianna will soon travel to London with his partner Terry Gill for a legal ceremony, after getting wed in Ireland at the weekend.

Aengus tied the knot with his fiancé Terry Gill on Sunday at a private Humanist ceremony in Ballymacgarvey, in CountyMeath.

The happy couple will now enjoy a honeymoon in Greece, before travelling to Britain for a “full marriage” or legal civil ceremony in the coming weeks.

MacGrianna said the UK ceremony would be a: “…much smaller ceremony, a more personal intimate one.”

Gill, 39, walked down the aisle on Sunday accompanied by his mother Eva, followed by Mac Grianna, 50, who was given away by his friend and former colleague, Anne Doyle.

The pair were joined by around 150 family and friends for the ceremony and reception at Ballymacgarvey Country House and Estate in Balrath, including several colleagues of Mac Grianna’s from the RTÉ newsroom, such as Eileen Whelan, Eileen Dunne, Michael Murphy, Kate Egan and Teresa Mannion.

His fellow Celebrity Masterchef contestants Tracy Piggott, Yvonne Keating and Maia Dunphy were also in attendance at the ceremony, where music was provided by a close friend of Mac Grianna’s, Clannad’s Moya Brennan, and performers included musician Cormac de Barra.

An RTE spokeswoman said: “it was a lovely day, when the ceremony concluded everyone applauded and cheered.”

Speaking on the Late Late Show previously, Aengus said: “Civil Partnership has been a huge step forwards but it’s not marriage.

“It’s a lesser form of marriage. Now I am free to marry, but I can only marry a women so being gay, clearly that’s not going to work. So I am not free here to marry the person I love, the person I want to marry and commit to and spend the rest of my life with.”

The Dublin news anchor came out shortly after he left school in the 1980s, saying: “It was late 80s and Ireland was a very different country then. It was a very difficult time but I hated lying to my family and friends.”

Aengus and Terry first met over ten years ago at the Dublin bar The Front Lounge.
