Robert Emmetts 4-09
St Gabriels 2-13

by Gavin Mawn

St Gabriels’ pursuit of a third consecutive senior title was plunged into doubt after a shock two-point defeat to Robert Emmetts who recorded their first win of the campaign.

Goals from Mark Traynor (two), Cathal Keogh and Kevin McMullan had condemned Tommy Duane’s side to a second round robin defeat in a row, after their 3-10 to 1-7 loss to Kilburn Gaels in round two.

Gabriels welcomed back their talisman Martin Finn, who was unable to play against Kilburn, but that still failed to kick-start them into first gear as Emmetts looked like a team high in confidence despite their losing start to the campaign.

After a point from Gabriels’ Robert Ryan, two points from Rory Costello and a point from McMullan raced Emmetts into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead within five minutes. That seemed to prompt Gabriels into immediate action and despite a host of chances being squandered; they soon turned the score on its head and surged into the lead through points from Rory Foy, the impressive James Barrett and Finn.
