 Charlize Theron

By staff reporter

Charlize Theron has spoken about the time she had a bit of fun for Ireland at the expense of the French four years ago in the run-up to the World Cup in South Africa.

The South African-born actress, who dates Sean Penn, was one of the people selected to call out the names of the teams in the World Cup draw. While rehearsing, she made a joke that the French baulked at, announcing Ireland instead of France.

The joke was making reference to the fact that, thanks to an illegal handball goal scored by Thierry Henry, France dropped Ireland out of the tournament. The ref never copped on and that was Ireland out of the World Cup.

“That was only fair,” she told The Irish Times of her mischievous comment.  “But you should have seen [the French]. They were so panicked about it. They really, really thought I was going to do that on the day. I gave them all a heart attack.”

At that time, Theron, mum to two-year-old adopted son Jackson, was still with the Irish actor Stuart Townsend, who she was with for many years and shared a home with in California before they separated four years ago.

In the current issue of Esquire, she says her wish to have children had nothing to do with her break-up with the Irish actor: “In his defense, it was not that he didn’t want to have children. It was just something that never worked out.”
