Dorothy ‘Dott’ Hengeller, a former Washington Rose of Tralee, is to be buried in Kerry three years after taking part in the festival.

Dorothy died last week in her Baltimore home after a battle with illness and is to be buried alongside her sister, who died there of meningitis three decades ago as a toddler, in Aghadoe cemetery outside her mother’s native Killarney.

Dott, who was born and raised in the U.S., represented Washington at the Rose of Tralee International Festival in 2011 when she was 25, and died a week before her 28th birthday.

According to the Irish Independent, Dorothy adored Killarney and visited the town every year.

In a statement her family told the paper: “Today our beloved Dorothy joined her sister Treasa in heaven. She was surrounded by her adoring family at home and passed away peacefully. We are so grateful for the 27 years of joy she brought to us.”
